藝術界在2021年持續應對疫情的狀態下，紐約新美術館（The New Museum）依然也向藝術界公佈了其第五屆三年展的參展藝術家名單。此次展覽標題為 “Soft Water Hard Stone”，是由新美術館的 Margot Norton 和洛杉磯當代藝術中心的 Jamillah James 共同策劃，其展覽時間將從 2021年10月27日開始，至 2022年1月23日。
據了解，展覽將佔據美術館四層樓，展示來自共 23個國家的 40位藝術家的作品，且全數為新作。其藝術家參展名單中，也包括了中國藝術家于吉，且大部分參展藝術家之前皆從未在美國境內的博物館展出過。
此次第五屆的新美術館三年展展覽，其標題來源其事是一句巴西諺語，翻譯成中文其意涵近於『水滴石穿』。「在這個發生深刻變化的時刻，曾經被認為穩定的結構變得岌岌可危、破碎或處於崩潰邊緣，2021三年展將呈獻對傳統模式、材料和技術進行重新想像，超越既定制度模式的藝術家。」三年展主辦單位說。
